Now that you’ve created your stops and lines, it’s time to connect them! In Moovit, a Trip defines the journey a passenger takes. Think of it as the "skeleton" of the transit operation: without a logical sequence of stops, the bus has nowhere to go. 🏗️🚌
1. What is a Trip? 🤔
A single line can have several different trips. For example:
- An Inbound trip (Downtown → Suburbs).
- An Outbound trip (Suburbs → Downtown).
- A Short trip (one that ends before the original final stop). Each of these variations is a "Trip" within the same line.
2. Creating Your Trip (Step-by-Step) 🏗️
First you have to find the line you want to add a trip on. Once you clicked on the line you can add a trip, by clicking on the button "+New Trip".
.
A “new trip” window will open on your screen and this is the time to set the trip’s Headsign. Define whether the trip is Inbound or Outbound. Click on “Save” Architect’s Tip: Give the trip a clear name. In the "Headsign" field, enter exactly what is displayed on the bus's electronic sign (e.g., Central Station via Hospital). This is what the passenger will see in the app! 📱
The trip you just created will be in the line’s details now. And this is how it looks:
Once the trip is created, click on it to access the following overview. The page opens on the 'Stop Sequence' section by default, though you can navigate to other sections as well.
3. General Info tab
Within the General Info tab, you can update the Headsign and Direction and include internal Notes to organize data regarding unique schedules or trip variations visible only within the Editor.
4. Stop Sequence Tab🔗
This is the most crucial part: telling the system which points the bus passes through and in what specific order.
- Adding Stops: For existing stops, you can use the stop search bar to locate them (or move around the map until you find it). If a stop does not appear on the map you should create the stop on the map before you add it to the trip. Once you left click on a stop, it will immediately show up on the stop sequence tab. Continue searching for the next stops in the correct order and left-clicking on them to create the full stop sequence. You will notice a blue line will connect the stops you added to the stop sequence. Click “Save”.
-
Architect’s Tip: Always double-check that you are connecting the stops on the correct side of the street! 🏁
5. Editing an Existing Sequence 🛠️
-
Open the specific trip and go to the Stop Sequence tab. To remove a stop that is no longer part of the route, click the "trash icon" next to it.
- To add a new stop between two existing ones, simply find the “transparent dot” on the blue line and drag it to the stop you want to add on the stop sequence
Remember: a stop sequence must be logical and continuous. In the next guide, we’ll learn how to draw the path (Shape) that connects these dots! 📐✨
Now that the stop sequence is defined, the next step is to add the schedules to your trip. To learn how to add schedules, check out this article: 🕒 Trip Schedules: Mastering Departure Times.
