The bus stop (or station) is the meeting point between the passenger and their journey. In Moovit, we refer to any physical location where boarding and alighting take place as a Stop. Positioning a stop correctly is what ensures a user doesn't miss their bus by waiting on the wrong side of the street. 🚌✨
Creating Your First Stop 🏗️
Adding a new stop to the map is intuitive, but it requires attention to detail:
- Use the search bar at the top right of the map to search for the location of the stop you would like to add. You can put in lat/lon coordinates as well.
- Right-Click on the map exactly where the stop is located. The address will be automatically generated. The name can be added as well. Click OK.
- Architect’s Tip: Always use Satellite View. It allows you to see the shelter, the pole, or the road markings, ensuring the icon isn't "floating" in the middle of the street or on top of a building. Remember: you must identify which side of the road the bus travels on and place the stop accordingly.🛰️
After clicking “OK”, make sure to press “Save”.
Fine-Tuning: Editing and Moving 🛠️
Cities change, and so do stops! If you find a stop that is in the wrong place or has an outdated name:
- Moving: Simply right-click on the stop and drag it to the correct position. Remember: in Moovit, the icon should be where the passenger waits—usually on the sidewalk—and never in the middle of the road.
Information: When you right-click a stop, its icon will become yellow and the left panel will open. You can adjust the Stop Name (use the official name or how it’s locally known), its code and Wheelchair Accessibility.
Here you can also view the stop's latitude & longitude and copy its coordinates when needed. Additionally, when you enter a coordinate into the search bar, the editor will direct you to that location on the map.
Organization and Filter Tools 🔍
In areas with many lines, the map can get cluttered. To work clearly:
- Agency Filters: You can filter the map to see only the stops of a specific company. This prevents you from editing Agency A’s stop thinking it belongs to Agency B.
- Stop Filters:
- You may filter only the child stops by enabling the “Show hub stations & group of stops” option, which removes the parent stops from view.
- You may filter only the stops that have active routes by enabling the “Show only active stops” option, which removes stops that are empty or have all their routes set to inactive.
🚉Hub Stations vs. Group Stations
When adding a new stop to the Editor, you can choose between a Regular Stop, a Hub Station, or a Group Station. Choosing the correct one is vital for calculating accurate walking times for passengers. 🚶♂️⏱️
Hub Station: A hub station is used to represent Bus terminals, train stations, subway stations, where multiple stations/platforms are within one larger station, and the larger station has exits and entrances.
Group Station: This is used when we have several stops in the editor that come from different projects, but are in reality there is only one stop. This can especially happen in cases where we have community and official data in one area. In order to more correctly show the reality, we group these stations together.
🛠️ How to add a Hub Station
- Select Hub Station📍
- Provide Name & Transit Type 📝
- Define Size Type: This sets the default walking time from entrance to platform:
- Small: 60 seconds ⏱️
- Medium: 180 seconds ⏱️
- Large: 300 seconds ⏱️
Add Stops/Platforms: Left-click on existing stations to link them to your Hub. You can unlink or edit them as needed. 🔗
5. Add Entrances/Exits:
- Click “Add Entrance/Exit” and left-click on the map to place the entrance/exit
- ⚠️ Important: When placing the entrance/exit - you must use the Permissions layer, so the entrance is placed in a location that riders can walk.
- Provide the name for the Entrance / Exit - use the name on the entrance sign, or use the cross streets, or what makes sense to you
- Type: Define as Entrance Only, Exit Only, or Both. 🚪
- Accessibility (Coming Soon!): Define if the entrance is accessible (elevator/ramp) or non-accessible (stairs, escalator). ♿
- Walking Time: Based on station size, but can be edited per entrance/exit for precision. Please note that if you change the station size after adding entrances - the walking time for the existing entrances will not change.
🛠️ How to add a Group Station
- Select Group Station 🖇️
- Provide Name & Transit Type: Identify the group station clearly. 🏷️
- Add Stop/Platforms: Combine the markers that represent the single real-world location. ✅
- Note: Group Stations do not have Exits or Entrances. 🚫🚪
